FINDING THEIR HOUSE
A Middle School tradition helps students find their place within one of six faith-centered houses.
One of Mount Pisgah’s newest traditions returned this fall as students gathered for the annual House Sorting Ceremony. Now in its second year, the House System creates opportunities for students in grades 5-8 to build relationships across grade levels while strengthening their sense of belonging, all rooted in faith.
During the ceremony, every fifth-grade student, along with new sixth, seventh and eighth graders, was officially welcomed into one of six houses. Each is named for a significant biblical mountain and connected to a Scripture passage that reflects the values of the house.
- Sinai: Mount Sinai was where God established His covenant with Israel and gave Moses the Ten Commandments. Rooted in Exodus 19:1-20:21, Sinai represents responsibility and leadership, with stone tablets featured on its crest.
- Zion: Throughout Scripture, Mount Zion represents the dwelling place of God and His spiritual kingdom. Inspired by Psalm 132:13-16, Zion emphasizes steadfastness and reverence, symbolized by a throne.
- Moriah: Mount Moriah was the setting of Abraham’s test of faith and obedience in Genesis 22:1-19. The house represents obedience and courage, with a ram appearing on its crest.
- Carmel: Mount Carmel was the site of Elijah’s confrontation with the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18:20-40, a powerful demonstration of faith in God. Carmel represents boldness and conviction, symbolized by fire.
- Tabor: Traditionally associated with the Transfiguration described in Matthew 17:1-11, Mount Tabor points to the revelation of Christ’s glory. Tabor represents wisdom and confidence, with a crown and sunbursts on its crest.
- Ararat: Mount Ararat marks the new beginning that followed the flood in Genesis 8:1-22. Represented by a dove, Ararat emphasizes determination and strength.
Throughout the year, students earn points through house challenges, school spirit and participation in community events, adding a layer of friendly competition to the experience. After Sinai claimed the inaugural House championship last year, Carmel has taken an early lead this year with 175 points.
For the newest members of each Middle School house, the Sorting Ceremony marks the beginning of a tradition they will share throughout their years at Mount Pisgah.
