EXPLORING HEALTHCARE CAREERS THROUGH HOSA
A new HOSA chapter at Mount Pisgah Christian School gives students hands-on opportunities to discover healthcare careers and grow as compassionate, faith-driven leaders.

As students enter high school,
many begin thinking about what career path they want to pursue. One popular goal is the pre-med track, with students aspiring to work in the medical or healthcare field in some way. But how can a student know what that path actually looks like—or whether it’s the right fit?
That’s where HOSA: Health Occupations Students of America comes in. This year, Mount Pisgah Christian School introduced a new HOSA Club, part of a nationwide organization dedicated to health science education and leadership. The club helps students explore real-world opportunities in healthcare, understand the demands of the field, and decide if working in medicine is truly their calling.
What is HOSA?
Founded in 1976, HOSA–Future Health Professionals prepares and educates students for healthcare careers through leadership development, community service, and competitive events. What makes HOSA unique is its incredible scale and impact. With more than 250,000 members worldwide and official recognition from the U.S. Department of Education, HOSA gives students a platform to learn, lead, and connect with peers who share a passion for helping others.
“HOSA gives students the chance to explore real-world healthcare careers, compete in national events, attend conferences and workshops, and connect with other students inside and outside of Pisgah who share the same interests,” explains Emily Stearns, the club’s faculty sponsor.
Connecting HOSA’s Mission to Mount Pisgah’s Values
At its core, HOSA’s mission aligns closely with Mount Pisgah’s own values. The organization emphasizes learning, leadership, service, and innovation—the same principles that guide the culture of Mount Pisgah Christian School. The result is more than a pathway to healthcare; it’s a community that develops well-rounded, purpose-driven students.
“A platform like this being added to Mount Pisgah is an incredible opportunity for students to build confidence, leadership skills, and learn how to make a difference in people’s lives,” says Stearns. “The club teaches responsibility, teamwork, and professionalism while providing valuable networking and scholarship opportunities. It also helps students develop a sense of purpose and direction for their future.”
Student Leaders Helping Students Grow
Alongside Stearns, juniors Grace Stearns, Kiana Patel, and Gabe Medebem have stepped into HOSA’s leadership roles, inspired by the impact they can create.
“We recognized the need for a healthcare-focused club at our school that would create numerous opportunities for students,” explains G. Stearns.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Opportunities and Impact
Looking ahead, the HOSA leadership team is focused on building community through service and collaboration. “Some of our goals include developing leadership and teamwork skills, encouraging community involvement, preparing students for the future, building confidence and communication skills, and motivating students to become leaders in the health community through education and experience,” adds Patel.
This year, the club plans to participate in HOSA conferences, organize health awareness projects, and collaborate with local hospitals and healthcare organizations to extend their reach. Future plans include hosting guest speakers and connecting students with professionals in various healthcare fields.
Even those outside the student body can help strengthen HOSA’s impact. Families and community members can support the club by sharing professional healthcare connections, volunteering as guest speakers or mentors, or sponsoring travel and events. Whether these students become doctors, nurses, researchers, or public health leaders, HOSA at Mount Pisgah Christian School is helping them discover how faith, knowledge, and compassion can work together to heal, serve, and inspire.
