Beyond the Bell Spotlight: Exploring Summer College Programs

STUDENTS EXPLORE SUMMER COLLEGE PROGRAMS

The latest episode of the Beyond the Bell student podcast unpacks exciting summer experiences for two MPCS seniors

At Mount Pisgah Christian School, learning doesn't stop when the final bell rings. This blog post launches a new recurring blog series spotlighting Beyond the Bell, a student-produced podcast that captures life beyond the classroom through student voices, experiences, and ideas shaping our community.

Hosted by Maddie Cuppia, Editor in Chief of MPCS's student paper, The Liberty Bell, each Beyond the Bell episode explores topics that matter to Pisgah students, from campus life and academics to personal growth and future plans. As new episodes are released, we will occasionally share companion blog features like this one to highlight key moments, student life and leadership opportunities, and encourage the community to tune in.

In this episode, Maddie sits down with students Clara Louise Rogers and Maddy Zeitlin to discuss their experiences in summer college programs, what stood out, what surprised them, and how these opportunities helped shape their perspectives as they prepare for life after Pisgah. Listen to the full episode here, and read on for a few of the questions Maddie asked:

Question: Where did your summer college journeys take you?

Both students participated in immersive programs that offered different glimpses into college life. Maddy Zeitlin attended Duke University’s Summer Program, studying Law and Social Psychology. Clara Louise Rogers was selected for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, held at Georgia Southern University, where she focused on dance.

Together, their experiences highlight the wide range of summer opportunities available to students exploring academic and creative interests.

Question: What drew you to these college programs?

For both Clara and Maddy, the appeal went beyond adding something to a résumé. Each student was looking for a deeper experience connected to her interests, whether that meant exploring a potential major or fully immersing herself in a creative discipline.

They also shared a common goal of experiencing college-level learning and independence in an environment designed for high school students.

To hear more about what they hoped to gain, and whether those expectations were met, listen to the full episode.

Question: How did living on a college campus shape your experience?

Living on campus played a major role in both experiences. From navigating new routines to sharing space with roommates they had never met before, Clara and Maddy gained a realistic preview of college life.

While the first few days felt overwhelming, both students quickly found their footing by building friendships, managing schedules, and growing more confident in their independence.

Question: What advice would you give to other MPCS students considering summer programs?

Clara and Maddy agreed on one key takeaway: do not be afraid to try. Whether a program confirms an existing interest or introduces something new, the value comes from leaning in, staying open minded, and fully engaging in the experience.

They also emphasized that students do not need everything figured out before applying. The process itself can be a valuable part of the learning journey.

From application insights to daily life on campus and reflections on personal growth, this episode of Beyond the Bell offers an honest look at what summer college programs are really like from a student perspective, and how they can be valuable opportunities for college prep as they prepare for what's next.
