A WEEK OF THE ARTS IN LOWER SCHOOL

Celebrating student expression and special guests

Arts Week brought creativity to life across the MPCS Lower School campus. Student artwork from every grade level covered the walls, turning familiar spaces into an immersive gallery. Throughout the week, students explored the arts in new ways and had the chance to share their own work with their peers and families.

We welcomed several special guests who added to the experience. The Atlanta Wind Symphony’s Brass Quintet performed, introducing them to live instrumental music. Dancers from the Drake School of Irish Dance also visited, including Upper School student Amelia Cook and Lower School students Lucas Mullen and Addison Wise, who performed for their classmates. Author and illustrator Shanda McCloskey spent time with students as well, giving them a look into storytelling and illustration from a creator’s perspective.

On Thursday, April 16, families joined us for Arts Night. The evening invited families into the Lower School to experience and admire student art pieces and performances. Guests also enjoyed participating in hands-on projects, making it a fun and meaningful way to experience the arts together.

Arts education continues to play an important role in student growth. Music education is known to strengthen verbal memory and reading ability and supports long-term development in the brain. Students who engage in the arts often show stronger academic performance and growth in social and emotional skills.

A special thank you to members of our faculty and staff, including Lower School Music Teacher Kelly Pugh, Lower School Art Teacher Kelly Ochipa, Fine Arts Director Anisha Lewis, Lower School Principal Dr. Becky Knight, and Administrative Assistant Tina Martin, for the time, care, and intention behind a meaningful week for our students.
