A HOME RUN FOR SECOND GRADE ECONOMICS
Economics, entrepreneurship, and a home team connection bring learning to life
MPCS Lower School second graders recently stepped into the world of economics through a hands-on unit that connected classroom learning with real-world experiences.
Students began by exploring the basics of goods and services, entrepreneurship, and the character traits that help people succeed in business. Along the way, they welcomed a special guest: Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson. Olson spoke with students about the perseverance, responsibility, and teamwork that helped him reach his goals, while encouraging them as they prepared for their upcoming Market Day.

Inspired by what they had learned, students designed, created, and built their own products to sell during the second grade Market Day. The event transformed the space into a lively marketplace as classmates, faculty, and staff stopped by to browse and purchase student-made items. This year, students donated the proceeds to ReClif, a fitness-based therapy center designed to empower individuals with autism - and a charity that Matt Olson partners closely with - connecting their work to a meaningful cause.

The experience continued beyond campus with a field trip to Truist Park, where students visited the Atlanta Braves marketing department. During the visit, they learned how marketing helps promote a team and connect with fans, giving them a real-world look at how economic concepts are applied every day.

“We are proud of the curiosity and creativity our second graders are showing as they become thoughtful young entrepreneurs,” one teacher shared.
Through the unit, students demonstrated both creativity and confidence as they explored what it means to think like entrepreneurs.
