STAR Student and Teacher

Congratulations to STAR Student Dominic Louw and STAR teacher, Mr. Bob Denham!

Louw earned the recognition due to his academic achievement and performance on the SAT and selected Mr. Denham as the most influential teacher to his academic achievement. High school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average to qualify for STAR nomination.

"Dominic is called to excellence. He conducts his academic and personal life around that calling and his diligence has led him to the top in almost everything he does," said Mr. Denham. "He always welcomes a math challenge that most others would reject and he has been a leading scorer on Pisgah’s competition math team for several years. Dominic is a self-motivated student who always went above and beyond in my classes both in his work ethic, and in his generosity towards helping others."

This is the second year in a row that Mr. Denham has been honored as STAR Teacher.

"Mr. Denham was and always will be the inspiration behind my passion for math," said Dominic. "The manner in which he leads his class engages every student in the room, urging us to learn even on a Monday morning. This was apparent even to 8th grade me, who had zero confidence in my math abilities before attending Mr. Denham's class. I have to warn future students though that his passion for the subject is extremely contagious, and you may end up joining the math team like me. Going beyond teaching the curriculum, Mr. Denham masterfully creates humorous presentations he calls "current events," informing his students of real world applications relating to what we learn in class. I wish I could have Mr. Denham as my teacher in the many years of math I have ahead of me, but that would be robbing future 10th graders of a fantastic experience."

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program is sponsored, administered and promoted by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation. Since its creation by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in 1958, the STAR program has honored nearly 27,000 students.

STAR begins each year in participating Georgia high schools when the STAR Student is named and chooses a STAR Teacher to share in this recognition. The students and their teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from one of the more than 170 statewide civic organizations and businesses that serve as local sponsors of the STAR program.
