Wrestling State Champions

Mount Pisgah Christian School's Varsity Wrestling team brought home another state title in last weekend's 2023 Dual State Championship.

This is the fifth year in a row that Mount Pisgah Wrestling placed in the GHSA Dual State Championship and their second time winning the Dual State Championship.

Mount Pisgah came into the tournament as the 3rd seed behind both Social Circle and Trion. The team won the Area Duals for the fourth year in a row, defeating St. Francis in the finals 68-12.

“This year we had five freshman starters, so the team knew it was really going to come down to the leadership of our veteran wrestlers who experienced the last championship run in 2021,” said Coach Josh Merry.

Mount Pisgah defeated Oglethorpe County before facing second seed and tournament favorite Social Circle in the state semifinals. The match between the two was back and forth until the second to last match when Conner Doherty was able to pin at 106 to clinch the Dual victory. The  Patriots won 33-31.

Mount Pisgah then advanced to the Championship finals against the host school and defending state champions, Trion. With only four matches left, the Patriots were down 26-19, but had some heavy hitters left to go. Joy Chane pinned at 285 for six team points, then Tyler Prinzo won by technical fall for five team points, and once again Conner Doherty sealed the victory with a win. The Patriots beat the defeating state champs, 33-32.

The win was a total team effort with Tyler Prinzo, Conner Doherty, Brady Nardella, Marley Washington, Tyler Nelson, Joey Bertrand, Max Greene, and Joy Chane all going undefeated for the day. Wrestlers Pierre Nelson, Christian Lange, Dillon Brubaker, Josh Lange, and Steele Brown did not give up a single fall during the championship run.

This is the fifth year in a row Mount Pisgah’s wrestling team placed in the GHSA Dual State Championship and their second GHSA Dual State Championship. The wrestling team now changes gears and will wrestle in the Individual Tournaments to try to advance to the Individuals State Championship. Area will be next weekend at Home.
