Mount Pisgah Christian School Mathematics Honor Society Mu Alpha Theta 

Bylaws

Chapter 1 NAME OF CHAPTER 
The name of this chapter shall be the Mu Alpha Theta Chapter of Mount Pisgah Christian School. The chapter shall be governed by the guidelines of the National Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta. 

Chapter 2 PURPOSE 
The purpose of this chapter shall be to promote scholarship, leadership, enjoyment, and interest in mathematics for students in Mount Pisgah Christian School Upper School. 

Chapter 3 THE SPONSOR 
The chapter sponsor shall be a mathematics teacher at Mount Pisgah Christian School.  The chapter sponsor shall be responsible for the direct day-to-day supervision of the chapter and act as liaison between faculty, administration, students, and community.  The chapter sponsor shall maintain files on membership, chapter history, activities, and financial transactions.  The chapter sponsor shall send the annual report of new members to the national office. 

Chapter 4 THE PRINCIPAL 
The principal of Mount Pisgah Christian School Upper School shall approve all activities and decisions of the chapter.  The principal of Mount Pisgah Christian School Upper School shall annually appoint the chapter sponsor. 

Chapter 5 MEMBERSHIP 
Candidates eligible for election to this chapter must be enrolled in Mount Pisgah Christian School, grades nine through twelve.  Candidates must have an interest in learning math at a level above and beyond what is required in their regular math classes.  There is not a grade requirement for candidates  No student will be denied membership on account of race, religion, color, creed, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual preference, and/or physical disability. 

Chapter 6 YEARLY REQUIREMENTS
The chapter is intended to be Mount Pisgah’s representative outside of the school by competing in organized math tournaments.  Since that is the main focus of the chapter, students will be expected to Attend prep sessions when scheduled. Complete prep work on their own and submit it if asked. Sign up and take part in math competitions as they are scheduled, whether online or offsite. Since there is no way of knowing before-hand how many math competitions will be held in a year, students should be proactive in taking part.  While it will not be possible for a student to do them all, missing them all is not an option for members. 

Chapter 7 DISCIPLINE AND DISMISSAL 
Any member who falls below the standards of scholarship, leadership, or character, or has been deemed academically dishonest in any class, will be considered for dismissal from the Mount Pisgah Christian School chapter of Mu Alpha Theta.  Any member who fails to compete in scheduled math competitions will be considered for dismissal from the Mount Pisgah Christian School chapter of Mu Alpha Theta. 

Chapter 8 OFFICERS 
Regular officers are not necessary, though a “president” and “co-president” will be selected by the student members.  These President-leaders will be responsible for most direct communications from the sponsor. 

Chapter 9 FEES 
There is a one-time student registration fee of $10. 
There will be no annual dues. 

Chapter 10 POWERS 
The chapter advisor is given the authority to supervise the administration of chapter activities, as delegated by the principal of Mount Pisgah Christian School.  The principal shall reserve the right to approve all activities and decisions of the chapter.  These bylaws are designed to amplify provisions of the national constitution and cannot contradict any components thereof.  The chapter is obligated to adhere to the provisions of the national constitution in all activities it undertakes. 

Chapter 11 CONSTITUTION 
These bylaws may be amended by the officers and sponsors of the chapter, provided notice of the proposed amendment has been given to members at least one month prior to the vote.  Bylaws and amendments must be consistent with the constitution of the National Mu Alpha Theta. Additional articles can be added as needed.
