What is your teaching philosophy?
I teach students to think. Economics is fundamentally the study of how we make choices, whether that is at an individual level or on a global scale. I teach students how to use the economic constructs and tools to think about every aspect of life so that they are making informed decisions, not just meandering mindlessly through life as far too many people are willing to do. I start every year with Emerson’s address at Cambridge, “In this distribution of functions, the scholar is the delegated intellect. In the right state, he is, Man Thinking. In the degenerate state, when the victim of society, he tends to become a mere thinker, or, still worse, the parrot of other men's thinking.”
Each day, I challenge my students to truly think, to take ownership of their thought processes and from them to develop not mere opinions, but an informed worldview.
