Learning Specialist, Middle and Upper Schools

We are happy to announce an expansion to Mount Pisgah’s student learning team with the addition of Mount Pisgah alum Janey Smith (‘08). Mrs. Smith will serve as a Learning Specialist, working specifically with our Middle and Upper School students. She joins a team that already includes Learning Specialists Caprice Pickering (Lower School) and Vicki Smith (Middle School).

Maiden name: Gibson

Year graduated from MPCS: 2008

College/Degrees: BSE, Early Childhood/Special Education/Elementary/Collaborative Education, Samford University and M.Ed., Early Childhood Special Education, Peabody College at Vanderbilt University

Where’ve you been: In Nashville, I was an instructional coach for Metro Nashville Public Schools. I also taught inclusion pre-k at the Susan Gray School, the lab school on the campus of Peabody College at Vanderbilt University, and at Kirkpatrick Elementary in East Nashville.

Family: My husband, Nate, and I have been married for 4 years. We have 2 girls - Jaylin, whom we adopted from South Africa in March 2017, and Addy K, who was born in November 2017.

Why education: From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. My mom loves to tell a story about me at age 2 setting up a classroom in my playroom for all my dolls and stuffed animals and pretending to be the teacher. I love learning, and I love helping students figure out how they best learn. Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”  I believe that a strong educational foundation can equip students to develop their individual strengths and passions and leverage these to serve others.

What you loved most about MPCS as a student:  As a student at MPCS, I loved being part of a Christian community, the focus on spiritual development and service (especially our mission trips to Montana, Russia, and Costa Rica), and participating in athletics.

Why are you excited to join the team: I am so excited to join the MPCS team in an Academic Support role for Middle School and Upper School! Mount Pisgah is a wonderful community to be a part of, and it is so special to be able to come back to teach at the place I went to school.  I am looking forward to collaborating with teachers and students to provide academic support.
